Some builders refer to them as SUV’s because they are capable of pursuing many species, including bass, without compromising serious fishability. They tend to have higher freeboard (sit higher in the water) than bass boats because they spend more time in rough water in pursuit of walleye, musky and pike. Livewells, rod lockers, a bow (front) or transom (aft or rear motor mounting position) trolling motor and powerful outboard power are the rule.  The Lund Tyee is a great example of this type of boat.

Aluminum Fishing Boats

Small lightweight and, durable trailer boats made of aluminum are most often used for freshwater fishing. Generally very simple craft, featuring riveted or welded aluminum hulls and bench seating, they can be operated in fish-friendly places - shallow water, coves, inlets - not many other boats can reach. Powered primarily by outboard engines, this type of boat offers both tiller and remote steering options.  Lund and Alumacraft both make a wide range of this type of fishing boat, ranging from small flat bottoms to the heavy duty and extremely popular Lund Alaskan.

Bass Boats

Bass boats have low, sleek profiles and are built to fish with two or three anglers on board. The minimum length of bass boats starts with 16 feet and can go up to 26 feet.  Ranger, Skeeter and Triton all are popular brands of bass boat.

Deck Boats

Deck boats have wide deck to carry 8 to 12 or more passengers (like pontoons) but look and perform more like runabouts. They are powerful, too, making them excellent boats for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding.  The deckboat is becoming more and more popular with families because they are very comfortable riding.  Princecraft makes the nicest deckboat I have ever driven and Crestliner used to make a great deckboat and you can still find one of theres on eBay once in a while.
